In the tradition of Wallowa Valley Music Alliance’s program TUNESMITH NIGHT, Juniper Jam opens with a writers-in-the-round set by three songwriters. This year we feature Joey Carper, Carolyn Lochert and Bart Budwig.

Joey Carper has spent most of his young music career as a drummer for bands such as The Alibis, Bitterroot, and The Lowdown Whiskey Rebels. In recent years Carper has turned to the guitar and focused on writing his own well-structured songs that have a solid groove and smart lyrics. He approaches accessible subject matter with melodies that are unique and memorable, and sings with heart and soul that belies his youth. Carper currently lives in Union, Oregon.

Carolyn Lochert’s musical path has taken her from roots in a small North Dakota town growing up in a large musical family, through Flagstaff, Portland, and Tucson—landing in Corvallis where she studied jazz composition with Rob Blakeslee at OSU. She moved to Lostine, Oregon with her family in 2004 and has been an integral part of the local music scene ever since. Her music is heavily influenced by the likes of Etta James, Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln, Aretha Franklin. Her recently released CD She’s Lookin’ Back contains eleven original songs that range from sultry to sassy, backed by top notch musicians including Warren Rand (alto and soprano sax), John Willis (electric bass), and Dan Gaynor (piano and organ), Corby Simpson (upright bass),  and Todd Strait (drums).

The music of Bart Budwig bridges the gap between the wide-open sprawl of classic Americana, the insightful observations of folk and the grit and honesty of authentic country. Recently relocating to Enterprise from the Palouse country of Idaho, Budwig brings songs that are highly evolved, utterly natural and unwaveringly human. With two highly regarded EPs and a history of sharing the stage with the likes of Rocky Votolato, Joe Pug, Laura Gibson, Matt Pond PA and Sera Cahoone already to his credit, Whisky Girl is Bart’s first full length album. His music is instantly familiar and from the very first song, instantly likable.  His newest recording, The Moon and Other Things is due to be released digitally in October of 2015 and on CD and vinyl in the spring of 2016.
